Holocaust Companion Program:
We Are Speaking Our Language - An End to Loneliness
These people who lived through the worst of modern history
deserve … some companionship, some pleasure, some songs,
some stories, some mamaloshn. We must make time for them.

To honor our living legacy by providing compassionate and culturally sensitive companionship to Holocaust survivors in Yiddish through monthly or twice-monthly home visits, engaging in conversation and in interactive singalongs of Yiddish and Jewish songs. There would also be group activities and concerts connecting survivors to each other. As a Yiddish-speaking cantor, speaker and teacher with a national career as a performer of Yiddish, I would be the primary Program representative, to be joined over time by others.
In addition, with permission, we would film these encounters. One child of a survivor said, “We’ve got a lot of filmed testimony, but what we need is to see survivors as individuals, with real lives. How about, instead of survivors who happen to be people, people who happen to be survivors?” Resulting video footage could contribute to a documentary, in addition to additing previously untold stories to the collective historical record.
* Enhanced emotional well-being and decreased feelings of loneliness among Holocaust survivors.
* Preservation and celebration of Yiddish language, culture and traditions.
* Strengthened sense of connection and belonging within the Jewish community.
* Improved quality of life through meaningful social interactions and cultural engagement.
